The Craft Story

300 Years of Block Print Heritage

Bagru is a small village 32 km from Jaipur where the Chhipa community has practised hand block printing for over three centuries. Using wooden blocks carved with intricate designs, they stamp natural dye paste onto fabric — creating repeating patterns of extraordinary precision.

Natural dyes include indigo (blue), harda (yellow base), alizarin from madder root (reds), and iron (black). The fabric is washed in the Bandh river to fix colours and achieve Bagru's signature earthy palette.

Zaraya Fashion sources directly from Bagru artisan cooperatives — ensuring fair wages and preservation of this UNESCO-recognised craft.

Sanganer Town · Jaipur District

Sanganeri Print

Delicate floral block prints from the ancient town of Sanganer — characterised by fine motifs on pristine white and cream cotton. A GI-tagged craft of Rajasthan.

The Craft Story

Sanganer's Legendary Floral Tradition

Sanganeri print originated in Sanganer, a town on the banks of the Saraswati river near Jaipur. Unlike Bagru's earthy tones, Sanganeri is known for its delicate, precisely spaced floral and creeper motifs on a white or cream base fabric.

The craft uses fine wooden blocks with intricate floral carvings, printed with soft pinks, reds, greens, and blues. The white background gives Sanganeri fabric its light, fresh aesthetic — ideal for daily and festive wear.

Sanganeri print holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, recognising it as an exclusive craft tradition of the Sanganer region of Jaipur district.

The Craft Story

Inspired by the Pink City's Grandeur

Jaipur Heritage prints draw directly from the city's stunning Mughal and Rajput architecture — the geometric lattices of Hawa Mahal, the fort walls of Nahargarh, and the mirror-inlaid chambers of Amber Palace.

Bold, symmetrical motifs in deep crimson, royal blue, forest green, and 24k gold are printed on premium cotton, georgette, and chanderi fabrics. This is the most regal of Rajasthan's print traditions.

Our Jaipur Heritage line includes both premium and semi-premium ranges, with custom sizing and festive embellishments available on request.

Kota City · Rajasthan

Kota Doria

Feather-light chequered weave from the city of Kota — an exquisite silk-cotton blend known for its distinctive square (khat) pattern and breathable comfort.

The Craft Story

The Jewel of Rajasthan's Looms

Kota Doria — also called Kota Masuria — is a unique open-weave fabric produced exclusively in Kaithoon village near Kota city. Its defining feature is the distinctive square (khat) pattern created by alternating cotton and silk threads on the loom.

The fabric is celebrated for being ultra-lightweight and incredibly breathable — making it the perfect choice for Rajasthan's warm climate. Kota Doria sarees and suits have been worn by Rajput queens for centuries.

Zaraya Fashion sources Kota Doria directly from the weavers of Kaithoon, offering pure cotton, silk-cotton, and zari work variants in our premium and semi-premium ranges.

Ancient Resist-Print Technique

Dabu Mud Print

An ancient clay mud-resist printing technique unique to Rajasthan — creating earthy, organic patterns with a rustic beauty that no machine can replicate.

The Craft Story

The Ancient Art of Mud Resist Printing

Dabu printing is a resist-dyeing technique practiced in Akola village near Chittorgarh, Rajasthan. A paste made from clay, gum, wheat chaff, and lime is applied to fabric using wooden blocks — wherever the paste touches, dye cannot penetrate.

The paste-covered fabric is then sprinkled with sawdust to prevent smudging, dried in the sun, and dipped into natural indigo, alizarin, or vegetable dye baths. The paste is washed away, revealing the resist pattern in striking contrasts.

The result is a beautifully textured, organic print with earthy tones that are both timeless and contemporary. Every Dabu piece is entirely unique.

Festive Tie-Dye · Rajasthani Tradition

Leheriya Tie-Dye

Diagonal wave tie-dye in vibrant multicolour stripes — Rajasthan's most festive print, traditionally worn during Teej, Gangaur, and Navratri celebrations.

The Craft Story

The Festival Fabric of Rajasthan

Leheriya — meaning "waves" — is a tie-and-dye technique practiced in Jaipur for centuries. The fabric is rolled diagonally and tied at intervals before being dipped in successive dye baths, creating the characteristic diagonal wave pattern.

Traditionally associated with the monsoon festival of Teej, Leheriya sarees and dupattas were gifted by husbands to their wives as a symbol of love. The more colour combinations in a Leheriya, the more auspicious it was considered.

Zaraya Fashion offers Leheriya in chiffon, georgette, and mul fabric with traditional and contemporary colour combinations — from classic saffron-green to bold hot pink and indigo.
